To measure body composition in poultry, birds typically undergo analysis by wet chemistry or x-ray imaging on carcasses. This requires animals to be sacrificed at each time point of interest. Developing standard practices for the use of DEXA on live chickens will allow for repeated measures on the same bird, to reduce the use of animals and associated costs, and to increase statistical power. This study will look at optimizing DEXA scanning parameters and developing regression equations to correct the scan results.
